Update on Discovery Educator Network scraping my content…

Discovery Channel logo used from early 2000 to...IImage via Wikipedia

I posted earlier today about the Discovery Educator Network scraping my content… I also took the initiative to email Steve Dembo at discovery who is in charge of the network. He has issued an apology, and removed the post in question.

I’d like to poll my readers:

Should I pursue a legal suit against Heather Sullivan?

-->

Whether the content is still accessible or not, she still stole it. I’m not going to pursue anything against the Discovery Network, because it’s hardly their fault, but still I think someone should pay, and that I should be compensated. Anyhow I guess the case is closed for now, unless any lawyers think they can win a case against Heather Sullivan, if so contact me for a 50/50 split.

Here’s the email I received from Steve Dembo at Discovery Educator Network:

UPDATE: Steve Dembo’s Email Screenshot Image has been removed, Steve emailed me back and apparently doesn’t like his email being posted, so I complied at his request.

I’m still upset about this issue, but I’m just going to let it go and move on to blogging about stuff that really matters to me…

Note: He also requested the removal of the Discovery channel logo, but as the image is from Wikipedia, and qualifies as fair use, I have the right to use it, and unless someone from Discovery wants to pay me to remove it, it shall remain.

This Topic is now Officially closed and I’m done blogging about it. Let’s Move On…

    Thank you Lee for saying that so eliquently. We are a community of educators teaching and learning. I am sorry that this happened, but I know that when we make mistakes we usually learn much faster this way than if someone would have moderated it before publication. As DEN members, we truly try to understand the learning process and support eachother at every turn. I completely appreciate your willingness to allow this to pass as "lesson learned". I think Discovery does a great job in allowing us to share what we know and I think this will be a big lesson learned for many of us.

    @Lee: Alright lee, I'll concede on this matter, and be the bigger person. Your viewpoint is well appreciated.

    Patrick,
    What Heather did was wrong, but at this point you should leave it alone. Many of us are novice bloggers and are just figuring things out. I can imagine how humiliating this must be for her and rest assured, the lesson has been learned.

    We can all benefit from Heather's inappropriate action on her blog. Your reaction is justified and serves to help us all realize how serious many bloggers are about what they do (and rightfully so). Intellectual property is a serious thing and yet, such a difficult thing to protect.

    Legal action? What are the damages? In fact, I'd say it has not only generated good publicity for you, but has served as a good "community service" warning for all of us. The Discovery Educator Network is all about education, teaching and learning. That's what's happening right here, right now and like it or not, you've been pulled into it and at the same time you're making a positive impact on the blogging community, so... Let it go. Lesson learned. 'nuff said.
