The past week I’ve been going through a Basic Training of bad pr management. It’s not fun, but it’s very useful to learn, and the fact that it’s being directed right at me, instead of a client, may in the short term hurt my brand or name, but in the end it will prove nothing but a valuable learning experience. If you haven’t heard what happened just google: “Patrick Curl” and you will see that according to Shoemoney I’m an idiot.
I outted Shoemoney last week as a cheat and crook. Which he is, I also said bad things about his product, which I’ve never tried and don’t have any intention to try, I’ve read his blog enough to know that he goes after anyone weaker than himself just to gain more publicity, I’ll admit I’m not a super affiliate like Jeremy, I’m just a full-time blogger, and social media enthusiast. It all started when I read about a blogger who applied for a refund and never got one. That really got my goat so I went off on Shoemoney in a comment. Now a comment is hardly grounds for a full on war, after all isn’t the internet about having an opinion? Anyhow he unleashed his fury on me.
What Jeremy did is a tactic called flamebait. Flamebait is the practice of writing inflammatory remarks about a person, company, celebrity, brand, blog, etc – in the hopes that by talking about a competitor, or peer in a negative light, which gets people talking about you, linking to you, etc. After all having negative results in the search engines is better than no results at all.
Jeremy Schoemaker is an over-hyped guru, and has attacked viable people and companies from Robert Scoble (who’s a heck of a lot more respectable), to the SEO industry (which, is one area that I do agree with Shoemoney on, SEO is definitely dead, and useless. Social media is by far more effective, and has in fact replaced seo altogether.)
His product the Shoemoney System people swear by, his followers are like the followers of a cult. The Shoemoney system costs $2,000 to teach people to make money online through affiliate programs and other techniques. For that same $2,000 you could go to any number of online schools, or take some college courses. You could go and get A+ certified, or some other computer training. You could become a paralegal, massage therapist.
Sure it might mean getting an actual real life job, but sometimes that’s what we need to do till we can afford to start our own business. We can’t live in a made up fairy world called Shoemoney world where everyone buys his program and becomes super affiliates and we all live happily ever after. The odds of you actually succeeding in anything is only 20% give or take. That’s the same odds for any endeavor, be it inventing something, starting a business, building a software program you hope people will buy.
Yes, I’ll give him some credit he has made millions with his ringtones, he has also sold a ad network for more than it was worth, is super famous, and blah blah blah. He’s no better than a car salesman which is what he called SEOs. His favorite selling line is that he’s been fired from every job he ever had, (Just listen to his infomercial – go ahead and listen to it all the way through – tell me if you agree, or why you think he’s being genuine – heck if enough people actually speak up in his favor I might buy the system myself and put it to the test!).
Still his program is $199 a month, and how can I justify spending that much money, on something that’s probably just another hyped up program. Though there’s a part of me that thinks, hey maybe this Shoemoney character isn’t so bad…(well accept for the part about him calling me an idiot) maybe he’s one super affiliate who can actually teach people to make money via affiliate programs.
I mean, he does have thousands of followers, he’s got many connections in the affiliate marketing industry. He has actually put together multi-million dollar websites, and it is possible that he could teach me a thing or two. I’m still a little skeptical but if you want to give it a try here’s the link: Shoemoney System.
I will let you know that I’m not rich, I don’t care to be super rich. Maybe that’s what makes me different from the Shoemoney’s of the world, I’m not out to make a million dollars online. I’m out to help people learn more about social media and how to grow their web presence. I’m not an affiliate marketer, I’m a brand marketer.
Creating a conversation around a product or brand, engaging existing and future customers, is much different than creating a product, or using an already available product and marketing it to any old dick and harry surfing the internet.
Of course if you’re really die hard about making money online and not wanting to take a chance on Shoemoney (I can’t blame you), or spend $199 a month, then you might just want to give Yaro Starik’s Blog Mastermind program a moment of your time. This guy has been recommended by Darren Rowse one of the most respected bloggers on the planet. Yaro’s Blog Mastermind course looks pretty exciting. Again I haven’t tried it out, but personally I can see it being as effective as Shoemoney’s, yet it’s different enough that you can benefit from both programs.
Either way let me know what success you’ve had with either program, and if I get enough responses here I will bite the bullet and test out the Shoemoney System myself.
[Disclaimer mumbo jumbo: There are affiliate links in this post, but I'm not gonna sugar coat anything. I'm not gonna write a fake review and post that. What I've written is true to the best of my ability, and I make no claims as to the profitability of all programs mentioned in this blog post. Try 1 or all at your own risk. ]
