Add Social Bookmark Links – or be Damned to Marketing Hell!

Are you Using Social Bookmarks like a Pro?

When you add a social bookmark link, whether it's one of your own or not, you are helping other people sort the web, so to speak.

By tagging each link that you submit, others looking for the same material are able to find only the best information on a given topic.

By building a network of friends, and working to expand your network as far as you can, you can in turn build your brand recognition, and your website's traffic as well.

If you have really good content to share, or really targeted content, it will get shared between many different users. Don't ever discount Social Bookmarking - it does work.

Now that you know what social bookmark links are - are you using them?

You should have a script or program setup where every page that you want traffic to is easily bookmarkable.

The best way to do this is add a script or plugin (if you're using wordpress or another such blog platform). You can use third-party widgets two good ones are: AddThis and Sharethis

You could lose out on a huge amount of traffic and clicks to your website if you're not using bookmark icons on every important page. Here's a good video overview to make social bookmarking even more clear:

Social Bookmarking in Plain English:

Social Bookmark Strategy: Diversify.

When you do decide to add social bookmarking links to your blog or website, you absolutely must go big - add at least 10-20 of the most popular sites. The major ones include digg, stumbleupon, reddit, mixx, delicious.

You absolutely must build networks of contacts on these social bookmarking and news networks, the more the merrier because they will be able to see the links that you bookmark, and they will share them and it will make for something pretty darn exciting - if a web page goes viral on a social bookmark site it can bring as many as 50,000 hits over a 1 week period.

Friendfeed driving you nuts!?

Friendfeed is interesting, I've logged in a bit - but I find that it's extremely hard to keep up with everything going on.

Yes it's nice to have all this info in one place, after all it is the information age, but sometimes it just bombards us and we can't make heads or tails.

Enter Moopz. Moops aggregates friendfeed conversations and groups them into relevant categories, it then features conversations which include links to the same "interesting story".

Basically Moopz claims to weed out pointless banter that doesn't link to anything exciting. On top of that Moopz tries to pull only the best information possible from each story to give readers a preview, so they can decide for themselves if they want to read more, or move on to the next.

Each story is tagged with related keywords, so you can search for stories quickly and efficiently by tag cloud or keyword.

Finally, you can also browse the "popular" category, for the most active conversations in the past 24 hours.

Moopz may be the answer to ending the clutter on friendfeed, only time will tell.

Have you had experience with Moopz? Please share your stories, ideas, and thoughts on this social network tool.

Is your Blog a Dead Beast? 16 Ways Bring it to life!

Posted on 23 April 2012 by Patrick Curl

I launched this blog a year ago this month, and when I first launched it my primary focus was to make Digg Social Mediamoney. I've learned a lot in that year, and made many mistakes. I actually gave up on this blog for about 7 months.

I came back to it on March 15th of this year. In fact I had lost all the previous posts, I'd done and had to start anew. (Roughly 130+ posts gone). My original theme was using the law of attraction to bring $1 Million into my life by the age of 30, which I believe was perhaps a bit over zealous.

My new goal - apply what I've learned in my year of blogging, and help other's become successful. I'd also like to launch a few social related businesses eventually, that are currently in the 'idea' stages.

My 50 States Roadtrip / American Blogger Directory is just part of gaining an keeping an audience.

You'll notice the most successful blogs out there aren't just individual people talking while everyone listens. The most successful blogs are communities, where people interact with what the blogger is writing.

You'll notice almost every post they write gets tons of comments, trackbacks, pingbacks, etc... It's no coincidence - without this community atmosphere on your blog it is nearly impossible to keep your blogging growing.

Without interaction from your readers your blog will die. Just as a flower needs sunlight to live, a blog needs comments / reactions from the community at large.

Here are some tips to build your Community.

1. Tweet ALL posts to Twitter. There are some good wordpress plugins for this like Twitter Tools or Twitter Tools for Tweetburner. I highly recommend tweetburner because of it's statistics and shorter urls.

2. Build your Social Presence. Many might call it spamming, but if you look at Robert Scoble, and Jason Calacanis this is how they got huge. They built up the max number of friends on facebook, and they have 15000+ followers, a lot of those were gained by initiating the follow, ie following first.

3. Comment Frequently on other blogs. There is a secret power method for this which I will mention in another upcoming post, I will show you how to build hundred of incoming links extremely fast and easy.

4. Respond to your Audience. If someone sends you an email, drops a comment, replies to a twitter comment you made, etc.. Take the time to respond. Now when you have 10,000 hits daily it can get hard, and you might miss a few here and there - in blogging you don't need to be perfect, just do your best.

People like to know they're being listened to, this will go along way towards building a large following.

5. Ask a lot of questions. People like to be heard, and asking your readers questions via blog posts is a great way to give them this opportunity to voice their opinions. This makes it more fun to visit your blog, and increases the interactivity of your blog.

A lot of times I will ask a specific question at the end of my blog posts, and it will usually garner a lot of comments.

6. Be kind to those who are kind to you.  When someone takes the time to follow you or add you on a social networking site - reciprocate. Also when someone takes the time to link to your site - go to the post and leave a thankyou comment.

7. Stumble incoming links. If you stumble all of your own links, you'll eventually end up getting banned. One secret is stumbling any and all incoming links. If someone is kind enough to link to you in a post, go ahead and stumble or digg it, and you will get a lot of traffic, plus you'll help them get traffic. It's a win-win scenario.

8. Link to other blogs often. I've talked about this a lot - but linking to other blogs will get you on their radar as it shows in the dashboard on wordpress, and secondly you'll get a pingback / trackback from their site.

9. Start a meme. My Twitter Meme: Feed the Twitter Monster, has taken off hugely and gained a ton of incoming links and traffic, be creative though, and make it your own idea. Do something unique.

10. Start a resource for bloggers or website owners. I've just launched my American Blogger Directory, but it has already received a ton of hits and results. This of course is also part of my 50 state roadtrip, which is looking to be getting a lot of acclaim online as well.

11. Network with other bloggers. Friends will always give you more attention, and having more blogger friends never hurt anyone.

You can use some tips from my article on becoming friends with A-listers, many of the tips relate to networking in general.

12. Build your subscriber feeds. Market it anyway possible. The simple fact is you need subscribers, if you haven't read it - here's 39 great ways to get more RSS Subscribers.

13. Make your posts simple to follow and you'll have mass appeal. Make sure the text doesn't run together, as most people have low-attention spans and can't be bothered with reading whole paragraphs anymore. Lists are huge in fact I try to write 1 list every week, as they tend to bring me a lot of traffic just because they're lists. - I know it's crazy!

14. Get active in Forums. If you have the time, you might want to try being active in popular forums, or just answering questions on the different answer sites like yahoo answers, this will help build credibility, and lead to more traffic.

15. Share and share alike, then share some more! When you launch a new resource, pillar article, etc you definitely need to tweet / send it to your social networks. However, you should also retweet it, if it is bringing in traffic, and subscribers.

I generally send my rss feed link to twitter once every 3-4 days asking for more subscribers. Especially when I get close to the next big number like 200 - asking people to help you 'break' a number is a great way to get them to actually subscribe, it might be tricky but it works.

I also send my best links, resources, and posts to my followers on twitter and ask them to digg or stumble the posts. This usually brings in a huge amount of traffic. When doing this make it extremely simple, though. Send them the actual link to digg or stumbleupon, so they don't have to work. People are lazy and want instant gratification.

Another good tip is to help out other bloggers by forwarding their promotions to your followers, they may do the same for you some day. This can lead to some very interesting viral marketing.

16. Write your damn content, already! Last and foremost the #1 method to building a community blog is frequent posts. The more the better, I've said it a hundred times the more content you have,  the more traffic, comments, and interactive your site will become.

How I used Twitter to go from 32 subscribers to 47 in one Night!

Posted on 26 March 2012 by Patrick Curl

I've been a member of twitter for a long time, ever since I heard about it from mashable.com.

I usually try a lot of the stuff I hear there, but sometimes it's hard to really use, and get into a social network.

For me, at first anyway, I didn't get nor even understand twitter. Months went by where I had about 5 followers and I followed 0 people, myself. The only real interaction I had was my blog posts getting posted to twitter, me thinking - any promotion would help my blog.

This weekend I was taking a little closer look at twitter, and I noticed Robert Scoble's account. He has 15,000 followers, which is a lot, and makes sense he has a popular blog, only seems right that he's got a lot of twitter followers. However, I also noticed he is following about the same number of people, and it dawned on me, that if someone who's already successful, is following that many people, then perhaps that is at least one step to becoming successful myself.

So over the weekend, and during the week, while at work, between phone calls(yes, I work in a call center - the secret is out).. I've been following as many people as I can, so far about 4,000. That has translated into about 600 followers, and I find as I contribute to conversations, and others see people responding to me on someone elses' account, they too start following, as nobody likes to be left out of the conversation.

Speaking of Robert Scoble, he wrote a really good post, himself on "The secret to Twitter".

Once you have the following on twitter - you simply need to post high quality blog posts, and make sure your posts get added to twitter, some people will click through, many will subscribe, and some might even blog about your posts(so if you're reading this post, and like it, feel free to blog it!).

There are some plugins you can use to send your blog posts to twitter, and there's also a service. The main plugin I use is: Twitter updater.

Here is a good service -that lets you add any feed to twitter, there have been some who've used yahoo pipes to create some cool twitter feeds. The service is actually called: "TwitterFeed".

In closing, I would highly recommend, if you're looking to increase traffic and subscribers, that you make sure to follow as many people as possible, and of course approve anyone who follows you, I seriously went from 32 subscribers to 47 in one night, and I'm excited to see what tonight holds in store.

Blogs need to eat too! Feed your blog with 39 ways to build your RSS Subscriber base. So easy a slackjawed yokel could do it!

Blogs gotta Eat Too! Here are 39 Great Ways to Feed Your blog so it Grows

  1. Educate Your Readers - How can they subscribe to an RSS Feed, if they don't KNOW what an RSS Feed is?It is essential to discuss what an rss feed is, what a feed reader is, and how to subscribe, don't assume your readers are the most tech savvy, go slow and have patience with them. You may also want to give them some links to feed reader programs and sites.Examples:
    • Fak3r Subscribe
  2. Give them the Email Option. Feed readers are the rave, most of us know how to use them, and have a favorite feed reader, but not ALL of us. Some people aren't comfortable with new software - so offer them something familiar - a way to subscribe via email. Feedburner, and Feedblitz, are two companies that make this easy.I highly recommend using feedburner, in fact I'd say that feedburner is a necessary tool for a successful blogger. Besides giving an email option, you can also use feedburner to track how many subscribers you have, and there are a myriad of great features inside feedburner that just make blogging easier. You can even make money with it!Feedburner Email Example:
    Enter your email address:

    Delivered by FeedBurner
  3. Feedcount example:

  4. Throw a Contest. A lot of blogs I've noticed are using this tactic more and more. Blog contests can drive a lot of traffic to your site, and making the only entry requirement, having them subscribe ensures that you will get a lot of entries, and each entry is a new subscriber. Here's some good articles on running a good contest:
    • How to triple your blog’s street value, by throwing a Contest!
    • 3 Surefire ways to run a Radical Blog Contest
  5. Give something away. Rewarding people for subscribing is a great way to build a large subscriber base, free hosting, free wordpress installation, entrecard credits, ebooks, etc...Here's a good WordPress plugin to help you along: WP RSS Sticky
  6. Promote it Boldly, with a graphic. Above the fold. Like mine is! By the way if you haven't subscribed yet, maybe you should now, before you forget!
  7. Contribute to online communities. Promote the feed on forums / comments / email signatures, etc..wherever you can ethically post your link. Another good way to do this is answer a lot of questions on yahoo answers, and keep your feed subscription link in your signature, this is a wonderful way to build yourself up as an authority on an issue, and with credibility come the flock of subscribers.Maki - from Dosh Dosh - wrote "how you can increase your RSS subscriptions through comments alone."
  8. Use Full Feeds. I'm an American, I don't know about the rest of the world but I'm lazy and most people are, people are also impatient, they do not want to have to visit your site, wait for it to load, etc...Make your feed a full feed, and your subscribers will love you, and they may stick around for the long haul.
  9. Run an ad campaign. Use a special landing page designed to receive subscribers to your blog. Giving something away on this page could be a bonus, you could also use entrecard and promote a landing page as well, designed to drive people to subscribe to your blog, one thing you might do here is list some of your best blog posts.
  10. Write compelling content. Of course when it all boils down, compelling content is the best surefire way to build and keep people coming back to your blog, and subscribing to your feed.
  11. Be a Guest Blogging Pro. A good way to introduce yourself to new people, is via guest blogging on other's blogs, especially if you can land a spot on a blog with a little more authority or reach than your own.
  12. Start a Podcast. Podcasts are great way to gain more visitors, there are many people who love and follow podcasts, and for those who are camera shy, it beats youtube. Although youtube videos would be another method.
  13. Network with other bloggers. Probably one of the biggest, the more friends you have the more people you have linking to your best posts. I know I don't always have something to write about so I write a small overview of a post someone else wrote and link to the post(of course this benefits me because of the pingback/trackback)
  14. Cross Promotional Deals. Using the blogs that you networked with in step 12, as a starting point you can show a link to their rss subscription link in your feed, and they can do the same for you. The biggest benefit of this is that everyone who sees your link, is seeing it because they are subscribed to an rss feed - or in other words, they are familiar with rss, and don't need to be educated. Here are some plugins to help in setting up text ads on your feeds:
    • Feedvertising
    • Feed Footer
  15. Use Feedflare. Feedflare is a built in plugin through feedburner which will make it easy for people to stumble, digg, or bookmark your blog.
  16. Use Noindex. This will keep search engines from indexing your feed, and will thus help from getting duplicate content.
  17. A little black hat for you. Find popular blogs not using feedburner and burn their feed as yours. Then have feedburner link the feed to yours, automatically you will have a large number of subscribers. This isn't very ethical, but alas I figured I'd list it here, as I found it through another blog.
  18. Get Social! Use the following social media sites, and be sure to bookmark your posts. You should also focus to building relationships on these sites and gathering friends.
  19. Use catchy headlines. In the inundation of information, you only have 1-3 seconds to catch someone's attention enough to make them click on your post, the more catchy, and un-boring the headline the more likely you are to win their attention for the next 5 minutes.
  20. Enlist the help of friends. Sort of along the lines of networking, but instead of building new friends, use your existing network to spread the word about your blog.
  21. SEO and SEM. It's a no brainer if people find your site via search engines, and see a post they like, they are more likely to keep coming back, and might subscribe to your feed.
  22. Post as if your life were on the line. The More posts, the more people will find your blog. Also the more valuable your blog will be, but keep the topics relevant. You really need to post at least one blog post per day, it doesn't matter if you write them all during the week you should use the timestamp feature to make them post later on in the day or week, the best time a day for blog posts are usually between 8am and noon Eastern time, in my opinion.
  23. Stick to your niche. At least try and stick to your niche as much as possible, it will keep your seo high, and your subscribers will be satisfied, after all - they subscribed because they like the stuff you're writing about - don't change niches, and expect them to stick around.
  24. Citations from other bloggers in your niche. Or blog reviews. Getting write-ups from other bloggers is a good way to gain credibility and authority. If you can get some citations, whether by asking, trading, or just writing content that is so damn good everybody wants to link to it, you will see your subscriber count skyrocket.
  25. Pillar Articles. You Must have 5 Pillar Articles as soon as possible, these will make or break you. I recommend writing one per week, or every two weeks at the least. You also will want to put a link to these prominently on your blog.
  26. Linkbait & Traffic Bait. Link bait, is just something like a blog post, picture, video, etc that pulls in people, its sometimes viral and people share it with their friends, good examples of linkbait can be found at the front of digg, and reddit.
  27. GEt listed in Blog / Rss Directories. Here are a few lists:
    • http://www.vandelaydesign.com/blogging/blogdirectories.htm
    • 55 Active RSS Directories to Help Promote your Feeds
  28. Be sure you're pinging. Pinging basically notifies rss and blog directories that your blog has updated, and a lot of people check the rss sites when they are looking for topics to read. Two really good ping sites are ping-o-matic, and pingoat.
  29. Share the link love(don't let them know you're really being greedy...). Include plenty of outbound links to blogs with relevant posts, this adds credibility to your post, provides your readers with more information on the topic they're searching for, and also gives you some trackback and link love on the blog that you're linking to. Especially if you link to blogs that remove nofollow on trackbacks / pingbacks.
  30. Widgetize your Blog. Use mybloglog, blogcatalog, bumpzee, digg, and reddit widgets. Gregarious is a good wordpress plugin that helps with this.
  31. Make sure your blogs' autodiscovery feature is working. This is pretty simple you basically just need to add some html to your blog in the header file. Here's the code that you should add:
    <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml"

      title="RSS Feed for theresabloginmysoup.com"

      href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheresABlogInMySoup" mce_href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheresABlogInMySoup" />
  32. Get personal! Send personalized emails to each commenter on your blog, and at the end of the email ask them to do you a favor and subscribe to your blog - make this as personal as possible and this is a great way to network. Also if any readers send you an email, please make sure to email them asap, and again ask them to subscribe. Also of course you definitely MUST answer and respond to ALL comments, asap. Your blog should feel more like a community site, or at the least a question and answer session.
  33. Write easy to scan content.  Most people who use readers have limited attention and patience - they usually want the meat of what you have to say and they want it now! I bet half of you reading this now, are just reading the subtopics in bold, but that's ok. I also know many of you have subscribed, or will subscribe.
  34. Participate in Blog Carnivals. Blog carnivals are great ways to gain new subscribers, alas it is beyond the scope of this article, and this is actually one spot that I myself could use some more experience in, but here are some good articles on blog carnivals:
  35. Hire Guest Bloggers. Encourage bloggers to post guest posts on your blog. Their fans will usually check out your blog, and they will usually link up their guest posts, plus it's free totally unique high quality content for your blog. I don't see how you can go wrong.
  36. Become an Authority.  If you help people who have questions on sites like Yahoo Answers. Also becoming very active in Forums and linking to some of your pillar articles, and your RSS feed url, will drastically grow your feed. I recommend that you regularly post to 6-8 forums relating to your blog. I'd also recommend that you find the highest ranking forums for your niche, as not all forums are created equal. Don't just rely on one ranking method though.I'd recommend checking their alexa ranking, google pr, and if they remove nofollow from signatures that's a big bonus(if they don't have signatures, then you should stay away from the forum altogether...from a marketing standpoint.)
  37. Post a Series. Start a series of posts, if you grab your readers attention, then they will subscribe so that they don't miss the conclusion.
  38. Display your Subscriber Stats.  Once you reach 100 subscribers display your RSS Subscriber count, people like to follow, and seeing that you have a large following will push some into subscribing.
  39. Collaborate with other bloggers. This can be a lot of fun you could co-write a series of posts, and alternate which blog you post it on, you can share ads with each other's rss feed, you can start a business together, etc.. Anything's possible.
  40. Remind your Subscribers. Adding a 'If you liked this post, please subscribe to my feed' link at the end of each blog post is a good way to get a few more subscribers. There's a really great plugin for this called Subscribe-Remind, check it out!

This list is by no means complete and full, I'm definitely going to be adding more as I learn more. I've scoured the net for the most accurate and up-to-date information on building RSS subscribers.

Below are some of the wonderful resources I've found regarding getting more rss subscribers:

WordPress 2.5 – So exciting I can hardly contain myself…

Posted on 15 March 2012 by Patrick Curl

Everyone is probably aware of the new WordPress update coming soon.

I'm pretty excited, the feature that looks the most promising to me is the automatic plug-in upgrading. To be honest I am getting so tired of upgrading plugins. Of course the One Click Plugin Updater has been a great blessing to help in upgading, but the new autoupgrade feature will be pretty cool.

Technosailor wrote a nice overview of the new WordPress. You really need to check it out, this isn't a small overhaul, this is a huge change to what we're used to.

Some other good features include:

  • New dashboard focused on comments, posts, and incoming links.
  • New beefed up Navigation Menu designed to make life easier, especially for beginners.
  • Apparently there will be fewer options on Write page, and will use 'extra options' more extensively.
  • Better management interface, for posts, comments, and pages.
  • An updated time-stamping mechanism.
  • Flash Video Uploader (Who needs Youtube now?)
  • Improved Visual Editor.
  • Also a change to the widget functions has been discussed.

Of course the best way to see the new software is check it out on your own. You can download it here: WordPress 2.5

Seven Tips to Create Buzz for your Start-up Business

This is a Guest Post by Denise Gabbard an online marketing professional who says: "Let me help you market yourself", feel free to follow her on twitter, or check out her blog.

Starting a business requires lots of work and lots of thought, and most entrepreneurs are focused on building the perfect product or deciding how best to deliver service to their potential customers. Of course, a product or service that people will love, talk about, and recommend to others can all but sell itself. Most business owners are not that lucky, and will have to work at finding customers, and many do not have a plan to market their business.

Here are some tips on getting some attention for your business, both locally and all around the world:

  1. Market Yourself First: Think of the start-up businesses that get the most buzz. Typically the owners or one of the top executives is exceptionally good at personal marketing and branding, and already are widely known and respected or liked. Because of this, they already have a great reputation and people trust them. This kind of great mojo is great to transfer to a fledgling business to help it soar! Internet marketers are often masters at this—they are everywhere on the web, which provides massive exposure, and a very receptive soft market.
  2. Be part of the local community: Even though your customer target may not be exclusively local, participating in your local community offers a start-up business many benefits. Building goodwill with your peers in the community can lead to collaborations with people that help each other only for the joy of seeing local success stories. Organizations that meet just to network and create friendships give business people a helping hand spreading the word and creating buzz about your business. Leverage for further marketing efforts can also come with a strong network of friends.
  3. Blog about your business: Blogging is a very effective way to build buzz about your company, and easily interact with your customers and potential customers. The blog should be the voice of the company, as opposed to those that come from a personal perspective. Be the voice of the business.
  4. Video presentation: While blogging is a long-term organic approach, posting a video really should be targeted to generate immediate and widespread attention for your business. Video is hot, and if you put together a fun and humorous video, it has the chance to go viral and be seen by thousands of people.
  5. Start-up sites: Submit information about your company to start-up listing sites on the internet. There are several large sites online like Mashable and Start-up Nation that cover start-ups and also offer lots of great marketing advice. Smaller sites like Killer Start-ups let you submit your start-up information for the community to vote on it. Similar sites such as Listio, SimpleSpark, and FeedMyApp can help build an online network, build awareness and an online presence, and also drive traffic to your website, blog, and business.
  6. Sustained marketing buzz: This is one of a new company's biggest marketing challenges, but newer websites like Facebook and Twitter help you to gain popularity, continue your growth, sustain and increase the marketing buzz surrounding your business. The point is that you will need to continually work at sustaining and growing your marketing efforts for the duration of your business.
  7. Major announcement: Shortly following the initial launch of your business, be sure that you have something major to announce. Perhaps a few weeks into your launch, make an announcement of major upgrades to your product or services, thereby catching the fading buzz that was generated at launch time. Continually offering something 'new and improved' or some new change or advancement will enable your company to keep itself on the minds of clients and potential customers.

Having a plan, and working that plan, are vital to the success or failure of your new business. If you find that some parts of your strategy work better than others, you should increase your efforts in that area without neglecting completely other channels which may take a little longer to get results. Continuous marketing key, but do not be afraid to try something new or tweak your tactics when necessary for greater results.

Another decision new businesses need to make is about the best insurance. If your business is a restaurant or bar, check out this site for Pub Insurance to protect your investment and hard work.

Super Secret Blog Tactic: How 1 blog post brings in 100x the traffic!

Posted on 05 March 2012 by Patrick Curl

How´s My Blogging?Work Smarter Not Harder when you Blog.

Write, write, and write some more. This is a wonderful way to get found in search engines. It stands to reason that the more content that you push out into the blogosphere the more traffic and search engine juice you will get.

This is a true statement.. but it's not completely realistic. I've been caught churning out 3-4 blog posts per day working like a dog for $20 a month, it's really no way to live and it really doesn't help. It's not the best use of my time. I know - I myself have written a lot of blog posts saying: "If you want traffic - just keep writing more and more posts". Well, I will let you in on a secret that has been sky-rocketing my blogs' growth recently.

Before I shed this secret with you, I gotta warn you - for this to work you will need to focus heavy on a few articles per week. Sometimes working on 1 article for 4-5 hours if necessary. These posts need to be the highest quality imaginable.

Now, this isn't a new thing. In fact I've blogged about it before, and the more and more that I do it the more flabbergasted I am by the results. My blog over at PatrickCurl.com on Social Media is about 2-3 months old. I had it up a year or two ago as a personal site but took it completely down.

Now that I'm consulting small businesses on social media, I've begun heavily branding myself. Check out the site  - it only has maybe 10-20 blog posts, and a pagerank of 1 - yet now it's ranked on page 3-5 for the keyword: Social Media Consultant, and page 17 for Social Media Strategy(It's moved up from page 30 a week ago).

I haven't been comment spamming, or posting in forums. I haven't been doing blackhat seo - as if I even knew how to do that.

My secret? - Guest Blogging.

Writing a good guest blog post can be extremely important to your marketing arsenal. So far I've written most of my content for QuickOnlineTips.com, as they are very friendly towards guest bloggers, have top-notch content, and they have terrific subscriber numbers, alexa rank, and much more.

When guest blogging - be sure to read all their rules for submissions before sending them. Most blogs would like an image to go along with your blog post so be sure to search Flickr for a Creative Commons licensed image to use in your blog post. Don't be afraid to approach popular bloggers with your guest post. As long as you've put a lot of effort into the post, double checked the spelling and grammar, and have written one of your best articles - then you should stand a good chance of being accepted.

Why not give guest blogging a try, and write your first post for Social Media Soup? We are very lenient on what we will post, our only big concern is blatant links to your sites, 1-2 is fine but more than that is just a spam attempt and will actually be edited. Aside from that we will not condone using non-unique content. Content that is posted elsewhere on the internet is not ok to post as a guest post. Google will slap us, and will slap any website that is being linked to. It's just not worth it.

Additional consideration: Consider this, you spend 90% of your time writing guest posts, and hire guest bloggers to source your blog. This way what goes around comes around. Bloggers with less clout than you get their post in front of fresh eyes. You get to spend your time building your brand by an exponential amount by posting blogs that have more clout than yours. It's the perfect way to piggyback off one blog's success to catapult yours - and it really works!

One last word of advice if you do get a guest post out there - promote it heavier than you would for your own site. Let all your friends know about it and ask them to digg / stumble / share it. You will be amazed what this does for your traffic and google ranking.

How to Develop a Killer Social Media Strategy in 6 Easy Steps!

Posted on 04 March 2012 by Patrick Curl

Social Media Strategy Framework

Social Media Strategy is something that businesses are beginning to take seriously. There are certain steps that make a good social media strategy possible, and there are many things that can hinder progress. I'm going to try and give you the best information available on the subject and guide you step by step towards creating a strategy for social media that gets positive results.

Step #1: Define your social media goals.

Social media is about building up your brand and increasing views of your products, services, etc - but what are some tangible goals that you can set? Decide on 1-2 narrow goals for each social media campaign that you run.

Anything larger you run the risk of spreading yourself too thin, especially when starting out, and when you don't have a full-team available for doing the social media activities of your company.

Some good goals might include:

  • Taking control of Social Real Estate. Example: making sure that your brand names are all taken on all the major, and even most minor social media sites. A good tool to find your unreserved social spaces is KnowEm a tool backed by social media expert Brian Solis.
  • Increasing Traffic to a company Blog.
  • Having X number of engaging conversational tweets per day.
  • Increasing Targeted Followers on Twitter by X amount by X date.
  • Integrating customer service / support into Twitter
  • Designing and implementing a Facebook Page that has a good call to action.
  • More RSS / Opt-in Email Subscribers for your blog or newsletter.

It may be helpful to break these down to wider categories to help aid the brainstorming, for instance: Brand Awareness, Increased Sales, Acquiring Leads, Customer Support & Loyalty, Event Promotions, etc.. Pick 1-2 micro-activities to focus on and then go from there.

Step #2: Own it!

The fact is that you must take ownership and responsibility for your social media strategy. Every company that strikes out into this great new wilderness of social media must develop their own unique methods. Every case study you read can provide good insight into what others are doing, but to really be ahead of the pack - you need to be creative, and find ways that set you apart above others.

It's similar to traditional marketing where you're always trying to create a better commercial than your competitors and just hope they choose you over them because of the commercials that you run.

You will find each social media campaign that you orchestrate that is successful will be unique and have their own intrinsic goals, tactics, strategies, and metrics to monitor.

Furthermore - you are more than a profile. Your company can't expect to get away with just showing up to the party. To win over the social crowd you need to strike up conversations with others, just creating profiles on twitter, facebook, and linkedin isn't good enough to win at social media.

Step #3. Be open to change.

For many companies it's scary to make broad-sweeping change. Social media is one of those things that unless you embrace it fully, it's hard to get it to stick.

Some possible changes that you can at least brace yourself for and plan on are: Employee blogs, tweets, and profiles that help your brand.

Case Study: IBM currently has hundreds of employee blogs, each one unique, all w/ disclaimers of course saying that their the opinions of the blogger and not IBM. [IBM's Blog Directory]

Step #4.Be a social media sniper.

Narrow your sites on your target audience, and decide what your relationship is with your audience.

As I mentioned earlier each campaign will be different, and each campaign will focus on different people. From no prior customer relationship to full fanboy or brand ambassador - and everywhere in between the two. Knowing your target audience can increase the effectiveness of your social media strategy.

By knowing the target, having your 'sights' on them - you know where they are, or where they can be found. If you know 90% of your current target segment are on twitter and only 35% are on Facebook - then twitter is the network you need to focus on at this time.

Decide and find out where this target demographic is spending the most of their online time. If they're existing customers why not try to get them to fill out surveys, or do some focus groups.

Once you know how your audience is using social media, you can customize your plan of attack. For example: Video contests may be great for younger audience members as the majority of video creators are younger, whereas bloggers might be older generally and if you're looking for people in their 30s and 40s then bloggers may be what you're looking for.

Run a search on "Social Network Statistics" to find out what the demographics are for the different social networks, this can be a good starting point for your campaigns.

Step #5. How will you build a Rapport with your Audience?

I read once that for large corporations - social media is about how to make them 'seem small'. People want to deal with a small company, a company that values every customer, has integrity, listens to people's concerns, and has a real person behind their twitter account.

I believe that social media was created by our need to be small again. We live in a high-paced global economy. Deep down inside we strive for the tribal lifestyle that we came from. The world is changing faster than we can control, maybe for the good - maybe for the bad, on some level though humanity needs to have it's small tribes to feel 'right'.

By having a good social media team, or marketing persona that represents the company people can feel that when they're shopping your brand, it's as if you're the corner shop in a small western town back in the 1800's. There's a feeling of trust. When people trust you - they buy from you. When they don't trust you, they won't buy.

Step #6. Bring it all home - IE Aggregate the Metrics.

Part of a successful social media strategy is constantly monitoring all the information and metrics that you possibly can relating to your efforts. You should know how to use Google Analytics, Google Alerts, Google Trends, and other resources to help keep up with mentions of your brand online.

I recommend creating an aggregated feed using a tool like Yahoo pipes for google news, blogseach, alerts, twitter searches, and more. This will help you see everything that's going on in one place verses logging into 15 different metric monitoring services. You could also use any number of free or paid services to help you do this as well. Two of the best social media monitoring programs are Trackur and Radian6, they're not free but well worth the investment.

By monitoring social media you will know if someone posts a negative blog post, or forum post and you can fix the negative publicity by visiting their blog and addressing the issue.

Never do this in a defamatory way, simply apologize, own up to the error, and ask "What can I do to make this better?" - which is an easy way of basically saying, how can we make this disappear. Fix the problem and you will come out on top of any bad reputation.
