25Aug Computinghost.com / Xisto.com etc SUCKS - Avoid at ALL Costs!

I’ve had the nightmare that would never end, I signed up about 3 months ago with computinghost for web hosting. Computinghost has been nothing but trouble. They claim to have 24/7 support, more like 3/6. Support tickets are usually answered about 3 weeks after submitted, and their servers are ALWAYS down.

99% uptime? Talk about maybe 10-15% at best.

I am so glad I made the switch to hostgator, I highly recommend that you take the plunge and join them as well, you could join from my aff link and I’d be extremely grateful.

Anywho I’m finally done transferring to my new host and just wanted to drop a note and let ya know that I’m not dead or anything - not yet.

07Aug Update on Discovery Educator Network scraping my content…

Discovery Channel logo used from early 2000 to...IImage via Wikipedia

I posted earlier today about the Discovery Educator Network scraping my content… I also took the initiative to email Steve Dembo at discovery who is in charge of the network. He has issued an apology, and removed the post in question.

I’d like to poll my readers:

Should I pursue a legal suit against Heather Sullivan?

Whether the content is still accessible or not, she still stole it. I’m not going to pursue anything against the Discovery Network, because it’s hardly their fault, but still I think someone should pay, and that I should be compensated. Anyhow I guess the case is closed for now, unless any lawyers think they can win a case against Heather Sullivan, if so contact me for a 50/50 split.

Here’s the email I received from Steve Dembo at Discovery Educator Network:

UPDATE: Steve Dembo’s Email Screenshot Image has been removed, Steve emailed me back and apparently doesn’t like his email being posted, so I complied at his request.

I’m still upset about this issue, but I’m just going to let it go and move on to blogging about stuff that really matters to me…

Note: He also requested the removal of the Discovery channel logo, but as the image is from Wikipedia, and qualifies as fair use, I have the right to use it, and unless someone from Discovery wants to pay me to remove it, it shall remain.

This Topic is now Officially closed and I’m done blogging about it. Let’s Move On…

07Aug Apparently the Discovery Channel and Discovery Educator Networks Have Stooped to Scraping Content…

This makes me furious.. I don’t mind if someone pulls a snippet or paragraph or two from my blog, and links back to the source, even if they’re scraping to do it’s not that bad…in my opinion…however posting the entire post, making 1-2 small changes and calling it your own?

I never expected the Discovery Channel to do this, seriously this is messed up.  Apparently Heather Sullivan over at the Discovery Educator Network, is nothing more than a scraper and a fiend. She should be punished royally. If any lawyers are out there reading this - and want to help in a legal case by all means contact me, I’ll even give you a 50/50 split of the lawsuit.

I originally made a post about Ping.fm, and Pingpress.fm. My post was titled: Intro to Ping.fm(In case you don’t know) and Wordpress Plugin. Heather’s post is “Put Ping on Your Radar” which I found from a pingback to an automatically inserted link to a related post of mine for the keyword twitter.

I took a screen shot for legal reasons as well as to show you the similarities between her post and mine. Notice all of the links are the same, and the way ping.fm is in “” and bolded. Seriously heather you need to learn some etiquette, and the Discovery network needs to have some sort of moderation.

First my post:

My pingfm post

Now for the scrapers’ post:

Scraper\'s ping fm post.

28Jun Update: Adding missing content from 2007…don’t be alarmed!

As many might be aware this blog was recently relaunched in March 2008, after about 8 months of silence.

Originally, I lost the blog posts that I’d had, and it appears google is still punishing me because they can’t find the links to those posts anymore. Using a bit of ingenuity(aka the waybackmachine at archive.org) I’ve found the old posts and have been adding them, post dating them of course for the original date they were posted.

Next I’m adding 301 redirects via htaccess to make sure that everything is pointing to the right spot.

Hopefully this is enough to get google to give me some PR love. At least Alexa still like’s me!

If you notice old blog posts going to your feeds you can ignore them or re-read them if you want to. Just don’t judge me on them as I think my blogging style has improved greatly since those early nights in 2007, when I started out blogging about the Law of Attraction.

09Jun Flip This House! Investors Needed Offering 60% Split.

Shaker heights, in Cleveland, ohio is a remarkable community. The school system is probably one of the best in the county. Houses range from $150,000 - $220,000.

Yet - if you know where to look, you can find a few bank foreclosed homes that with a bit of paint, maybe a few new fixtures they could be sold for $100,000-200,000.

These homes range anywhere between $10,000 - $30,000. I’d say we would probably need an additional $10,000 - $15,000 for repairs and upgrades. Total out of pocket would be: $20,000 for a $10,000 house. The total we could then sell it for is $120,000.

That’s $100,000 profit. There’s even a chance we could get a lot more, this is a low figure. As our investor we would give you a 60% cut which would be $60,000 or more depending on the sale price. If you’d like to do another flip with us after that we would use some of our earnings from the first to pay for 50% of the 2nd flip - so you’d only need to invest 50%. On each of these additional flips we will receive 60%  - 10% extra because we will be doing the hard work of renovating it ourselves.

My wife’s parents are both contractors and she has helped build 3 houses herself - we have the experience together to do most of the work ourselves, saving the cost of contractors.

You can check out the Shaker Heights area at City-data.com

If interested drop me an email at: patrickwcurl@gmail.com

03Jun Life is a whirlwind sometimes…

Roadtrip Update:

Sorry that they’ve been few and far between.

I’m currently waiting for Overlay.tv to finish going over the contract I sent them - and hopefully I will have $5000 for my roadtrip with-in the week. Everyone there has been a big help and the money will go towards acquiring a laptop, camcorder, gps, and pay for the outrageous gas prices for the trip.

I don’t know if $5000 will be enough for the whole trip - but I’m certain it is enough for the first half of the country. I’m hoping to pick up momentum and get sponsors / advertisers to keep it going.

Currently it’s been rough to keep updates coming — as my new house - doesn’t have running water or electricity. It’s quite a doozy - my wife and I also are between jobs as we just moved out here. To say the least it’s been interesting. I almost feel like a pioneer - living by candlelight errr I mean flashlights.

About our Move to Cleveland

Our house definitely needs a lot of work - we’re estimating it may take $10,000-20,000 to get it good enough to sell. But we paid $3000 to get the house, and currently it appraises at $115,000 in it’s current state - we figure when we’re done we’ll be able to turn around and sell it for possibly $140,000.

Not bad for a $25,000 investment (or less)…. We’re also planning on living in it for maybe 3 years, it’s rent free living, the house is huge - and the neighborhood is one of the fastest improving neighborhoods in all of Cleveland.

A cop we talked to a few days ago said that he’d pulled out more dead bodies off our street than reside in the cemetary - which was a bit startling - but he also hasn’t worked in our neighborhood in about 5-10 years.

According to the power technician our neighborhood has improved a lot - a local hospital has been buying up a lot of the nearby buildings and has built a huge hospital presence.  They even have their own police force and have been making the entire neighborhood a lot more secure. A year ago they were even offering incentives for moving into the neighborhood - as long as you, or your children had no criminal history. Their’s maybe 3-5 foreclosures / boarded up houses and about as many houses that are currently being fixed up and remodeled.

I’m hoping to hold on to the house till the housing crisis is over then sell it, when it’s a seller’s market again. We do have some differing opinions as to the value of the home. When calling our insurance agent to get homeowners insurance - she suggested that according to an insurance appraisal 6 month’s ago the house was appraised at 340,000.  I definitely like the sound of that, as soon as we get some of our repairs done - and get running water / electricity etc - I’m going to have another appraisal done and see what it’s really worth, I do know that it’s a 3 story house with over 3000 square feet. It’s a Victorian Cottage Style home.

Anyways - just thought I’d let ya’all know what I was upto.

I’m excited to get the roadtrip on the road. As soon as I get my laptop I will also be able to make a lot more frequent posts as well, currently I’m just able to connect via the library.

It kinda sucks, but I just keep telling myself that now I’m a homeowner, and things will be wonderful when we finally finish fixing up the house and selling it.

I must say I did miss Ohio - I missed the green / rain. It doesn’t rain as much in Utah. I don’t like the humidity all that much - at least the sweating part -lol … But I couldn’t stand being uber dry either.

22May Trip from Utah to Ohio: $1000; Owning a home outright for $3,000 = Priceless.

IF you’re not aware - my wife and I just bought our first home. This is huge since we’ve had months in the past two years where it has been hard to come up with our rent, without borrowing from relatives. Due to hard times our credit was shot, but thanks to the housing crisis - foreclosures are plentiful.

We bought a triplex about 1 mile from Case Western Reserve College. It only cost us $3,000 - yes it needs about 5-10,000 in repairs but it appraises over 100,000 and is in ok shape all things considered.

Needs some drainage pipes fixed, fireplaces need repaired, porch and flooring need fixed, but can’t complain for $3000. I’ve never bought a car cheaper than $3,000. My rent for 1 year was around $8000.

Now that we don’t have a rent payment we can afford to put money into fixing up this house. I’m hoping to eventually use it for college housing, or sell it and upgrade to a nicer home for my wife and me. Either way it’s nice to know we went from renting to owning a home - outright in a month’s time.

There’s a huge piece of mind that comes from owning your own place - especially when you don’t even have to pay for a mortgage. I highly recommend it to anyone out there. If you’d like to find a foreclosure you should check out homesteps by freddie mac. It’s a free listing of homes in forclosure anywhere from $700 - $200,000.

I’m glad we made it here - we moved from Utah - we went through Denver on Monday - and just heard on the news that there’s a big Tornado rolling through Denver, CO. That’s just crazy. Kinda hard to believe we were just there. I tell ya, moving from Cedar City, UT to Cleveland, OH has been a huge ordeal - I’m glad it’s almost over, and will be extra glad when the house is fixed up a bit and fit for living.
