Android App Knows if you’re Infected with Carrier IQ

androidWoah, you might just be infected withCarrier IQ, sounds like some deadly disease, it’s not – but it’s still pretty scary. I like the way gizmodo puts it:

Hey Android user, this Carrier IQthing got you down? It’s kinda like you got drunk and woke up next to some rando from the bar. You wonder, “What if I have Carrier IQ? Should I get tested?” Been there.

If you don’t know what Carrier IQ is, it’s a little app that basically tracks everything you do on your phone and sends it to your phone companies so they basically can monitor your activities on your smartphone. Kinda scary, talk about “big brother” watching.

This guy named Trevor Eckhart is one savvy SOB. He not only made people aware of this whole Carrier IQ scandal, but also released a nifty Carrier IQ test app for Android to help diagnose to see if you’re infected. This app is free to test, but the pro version will remove it.

Of course the pro-version requires that your device be rooted, which in most cases will already have the Carrier IQ removed, so it’d be a moot point. Anyhow, it’s still a good idea to get checked to see if you’re infected by Carrier IQ.

Here are some things to be aware of with the Carrier IQ Test Android App

:

    • Like I said earlier, your phone must be rooted to have the app remove Carrier IQ automatically, if you still have it on your phone. If you do have a rooted phone and Carrier IQ it’ll only cost $1 to get the pro version to remove it. Not a bad price to pay for privacy.
    • Sorry to say this app only works on a few devices.
    • The “pro version” of this app could really mess up your system if you don’t know what you’re doing and is only confirmed to work on a limited number of devices. The best bet would be to use the testing application first off to see if you have this little bug on your phone. If you do, then you should install a custom ROM that does not have it on such as Cyanogen.
