Twitter is a Monster of a Promotion Tool – Let’s Try an Experiment…

Over the past two weeks, I’ve learned a lot about maximizing twitter. Before, I didn’t know the point of Twitter, now because of Twitter, I’m getting steady traffic around 800-1000 hits per day. (Not too shabby after 15 days, being back up and live, and having roughly 30 blog posts so far.)

On top of the subscribers, the diggs, and the traffic – I’ve also met some wonderful people, found some interesting blogs, had some interesting conversations, and increased the conversation at my site. I’ve gotten a total of 88 comments on this blog, since March 17th.

March 17th was also the day my traffic began going up, up and away.

The next experiment is actually a Twitter Meme.

Goal: For each participant to receive the following:

  1. More followers on Twitter.
  2. More RSS Subscribers.

How this works:

  1. Subscriber to my Feed. Via RSS, or Via Email.
  2. Follow me on Twitter:  PatrickCurl
  3. Put a comment stating that you subscribed & Followed. In your comment – provide your RSS FEED link, and your Twitter Profile Link.
  4. Please follow / subscribe to those who have commented before you. If you like, you can come back regularly and subscribe to the new people on the list, it is highly recommended, but not mandatory.
  5. Send this link out via Twitter, and See if we can’t get 100 subscribers / followers per person listed. (Here’s the tinyurl to make it easier: http://tinyurl.com/37k65m )
  6. We would also ask that each person who joins this movement – write a quick blog post about it – and link to this post (as this is where all the subscription / follow links will be.)
  7. You can also send out the blog link that you just wrote to Twitter, as well for added exposure.

As you can see this is a great way to promote your blog – but it is also an experiment, I’m excited to see the kind of momentum we can build on Twitter.

Other things you can do is stumble this post, digg it, sphinn it, favorite on delicious, etc…

I’m just totally amazed. Last week I wrote a post, which I thought was good, and all my twitter buds, seemed to like it as well, as they gave me a good boost on Digg.

You can read and or Digg that post here: “7 Ways to Be Best Buds With an A-List Blogger“  or Digg it here.

Over the weekend, I had some huge traffic to my blog as a result of the digging, and twittering of that post.

My bandwidth was huge, and the most amazing part is my Subscriber Base went from 81 Subscribers on Friday – ALL the way to a whopping 1836 SUBSCRIBERS, as of Today!

I totally can’t believe how much twitter has increased my site’s reach.

Have you experienced a Digg & Twitter Boost? What were your results?

What’s the most new subscribers you’ve received in a short period of time?

Here’s the plan. On the homepage there are a number of April Fool’s Day Joke Posts. I hope you can figure out which ones are jokes, lol.

Here’s the plan: Let’s make the internet community BELIEVE it’s REAL!

It’s one thing for one person to say something – but it’s totally different when you get a lot of people saying the same thing!

Pick 1 or pick all – and write a blog post, about the topic, linking back to the original.

The more creative you are, the better - feel free to include youtube video’s, photoshopped images, etc….to Increase the shock value.

Then come back here, and submit the link to your post in the comments – I will write up a 1 paragraph review of EVERY Blog that participates. I will also be picking one blog to do a complete blog review for, graphic intense, with a bunch of out-going links. This is currently worth about $40 as I have 1000 hits per day.

The best post, will also receive a Permanent Blogroll Link, on this site, as well as BlogContestSite.com (PR3).

Make me PROUD! Also feel free to digg / Sphinn the posts.

Shoemoney Arrested and Tazed!

Jeremy Shoemaker, aka Shoemoney was arrested Sunday night, for “Riding a Bike Under the Influence”. Apparently, and I agree, he thought it was better to ride a bike to the bar than a car, so as to prevent himself from getting a DUI. He did not know it is also illegal to Ride a Bike under the Influence.

Two cops, watching the establishment saw him leaving, followed him for a mile and arrested him.

It also seems that the cops claim he was resisting arrest, and they were forced to Taze him.

Shoemoney, swares he wasn’t resisting, and had only had 2 beers to drink. Shoemoney is talking with his lawyers, as to whether he is going to file charges against the cops, for unnecessary roughness.

I just can’t wait to see the youtube video! Lol.

Check out some of Shoemoney’s Best Blog Posts:

UPDATE!!!! THIS POST WAS ONLY A JOKE.

Apparently someone posted it on Darren’s Wikipedia page, and all hell broke loose.

In order to keep seo continuity I won’t delete the post entirely – BUT I do want to let everyone know that it was just an April Fool’s day Joke. For all of those who say I was early. It was April Fool’s day in Australia at the time. Remember not everywhere in the world is sharing the same day / time that you are.

Apparently some have taken offense to this post, I do apologize to those, including Darren. I did not mean to defame your character or person. I hope this addendum to this post will prove that point.

Problogger is Bankrupt!

Darren Rowse, probably one of the most famous and talked about bloggers in the blogosphere is filing bankruptcy. Apparently, his blog has been a farce, and he was ‘faking it till making it’.

The truth is that he never was making it. The most he’s earned is $1000 in a month, which went to bandwidth fees, and server hosting. His wife is threatening divorce if he doesn’t call it quits.

He has spent his savings, and built up a lot in credit card debt, in order to be able to go to all the blogging conventions, and build up connections which he swore would make him rich, but never really delivered.

He states, that if I fail, then everyone does. Which makes sense since his blog is one of the most trafficked out there. He is the authority on making money blogging, and to find out the Authority is broke, is quite dis-heartening.

This truly is a sad day for blogging, as it – pretty much means that all of us trying to make money on this should give up and go home. Go back to school, or get a real job, at a factory or something.

Wait – why am I wasting my time writing this post then? I quit!

Long Live GOOGLE-Soft!

Apparently, the CEO of Microsoft told the Google CEO, “Ha – we will sell you our company for 1 Trillion Dollars!”, adding: “yeah, right” under his breath.

This was all in jest, and a joking manner, however it was also on live television, and Google’s CEO immediately pulled out a checkbook and wrote a check for $1 Trillion Dollars. Bill Gates, at hearing the news crapped his pants.

Apparently Microsoft under-estimated the Search Engine giant, citing that they had no idea Google had
that much money available.

On a related note – Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, on hearing the news, tracked down the CEO of Microsoft, and shot him point blank with a .22 revolver, before ending his own life, ironically he couldn’t shoot himself, so he took a PC, filled a bathtub and took a bath with a Personal Computer. Ironic because it is his company that helped put a computer in just about every household in America.

I’m curious what we do now, since Google, now owns the whole internet / computing world, pretty much.
Talk about a big Monopoly. What are your thoughts on the matter?

I receive a few submissions for my guest blogger spot, and I do appreciate them of course. However I think I mis-explained things. So far I’ve received links to articles that have already been written. I would only be re-publishing the posts. A Guest Blogger post is a post that is written explicitly to only be published on the blog that you’re Guest Blogging for.

The Guest post needs to be new, meaning it can’t be published on any other site, people have been sending me links to already published blog posts, and due to the way search engine optimization works, it can’t be already indexed and duplicated.

I would like the full article emailed to me, it can be as an html file, plain text in the email, or anything similar.

IF I post it – I will add a byline for you and link to your blog, as well as everything else mentioned in the original blog post:Patrick’s Star Search – Looking for Some Guest Bloggers!

Basically the post must never have been posted on another blog, it must never have been seen by human eyes other than yours or perhaps, your spouses, it must be unique and original, and be the first time ever being spidered by search engines.

Let me know if you have any further questions regarding this THANKS!

Wordpress 2.5 – and All the hype!

Word out on the street is that there’s a new Wordpress ready to launch.

This is all grand and wonderful, but there are some setbacks.

Don’t get me wrong the new design is somewhat sleek – however, I had grown accustomed to the advanced admin menu plugin which essentially turns the menu into dropdown menu’s. Sometimes wordpress is really slow and this makes pretty much all navigation one-click.

I think, with all the new javascript based technologies out there today, such as ajax, jquery, etc – it wouldn’t be too much of an issue for them to include a drop down-like menu standard in Wordpress.

Another plugin that lacks functionality in Wordpress 2.5 is the Gregarious plugin, which I was using for social bookmarking / diggs etc.

I’m also not sure I like the way they redid the side-bar in the new post area.

But it does look a lot better in other ways, and I can see it being a lot easier to navigate for newbies. My beef is probably just the fact that I’m so used to the older styles look, that the new change will take some time to get used to.

Have you tried the new Wordpress? Let me know your thoughts.

A man struggling to put a hole in his ceiling, while installing a Directv system ends up killing his wife.

Talk about killing two birds with one stone….err Bullet.  (Satellite TV installed and No More Nagging)

Apparently, Ronald Long of Deepwater, MO thought it would be a good idea, as he was having troubles doing it the normal way, you know – with tools. Apparently he was having trouble breaking through the external wall of the house. The bullet went up – up -up arched and landed in his wife’s chest who was outside at the time.

Patsy Long, 34, of Deepwater was rushed to the hospital immediately, but was declared dead on arrival.

Officials are determining whether they should file charges. Spokesman for the Sheriff’s department said that a person involved in such a case, could be brought up on charges of manslaughter.

This guy – truly wins the Dumbass of the week Award!

*Personal Note: It’s a funny story, definitely strange, some people really aren’t the brightest bulb in the pack. But it’s also a sad story, she was a young mother trying to raise her children, and now their father is probably going to end up in prison. Sad to see how fast so many lives can be ruined – because of one stupid mistake.

NOW HIRING: GUEST BLOGGERS – DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOGS!

Here’s how this works.

I want everyone reading this to send me their very best blog posts. If the post is something I think I’d like to publish, I will send you an email, and let you know when I will be publishing it.

I will of course provide a byline for you to mention your blog. On top of that, I will add you to my blogroll. On top of that I will give you a full-fledged graphic intense Blog Review, worth at least $40.

If I decide NOT to use your blog – I will STILL write up a 1-paragraph review of your blog(and post it with 3-5 other mini-reviews).

This blog is about to break the 100 subscribers mark. I have 1400 followers on twitter, and 600 friends on friendfeed who will see each post. This blog gets 1000 hits per day(at least it has been for the past 2 weeks.) My alexa ranking hasn’t caught up since the traffic is new, but it will catch up, very quick.

Main Criteria of Blog Posts:

1. Must be along the theme of this blog, which is technology, blogging, making money online, gadgets, social networks, twitter, social media, etc…

2. The blog post must have never been posted else where.

This is a very good way to gain some added exposure, and begin building your brand.

Please send all entries to: patrickwcurl at gmail dot com.

Update & Clarification: I am looking for the best of the best posts – they need to never have been published elsewhere, and if I choose not to use your post – I will let you know, and you can post them on your blog, and I will link to all of the Honorable Mentions.

Alright. Via my google feed-reader I discovered this new service called Zemanta. I must say, it is kick-ass! It’s actually an odd plugin.

When you install it into firefox(only available platform currently), and log into your blog(in my case a wordpress blog). It shows you a sidebar in your blog, right where you categories generally are.

It tells you that after you write 300 characters it will give you content that is relative to your blogs. The more you right the more pictures, articles, and even tags it gives you.

Zemanta is a very nifty program, I highly recommend you try it. Probably the best thing about zemanta is the fact that it can take your writing to the next level, by providing easily inserted pictures and content. The semantic layer that it provides is awesome.

Another nifty feature of Zemanta is that it actually scans the web for Creative Commons Licensed content. So blogs will be able to post related images without the fear of being sued by angry artists and photographers.

Of course almost everything, these days has the chance of being abused, and it’s a pretty safe bet that Zemanta may see the birth of many splogs, of course only time will tell.

If you couldn’t tell – this post was actually written with the aid of Zemanta.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be best Friends with an A-list blogger? How about ten A-list bloggers?

1. Comment often – Commenting on A-List blogs is a good way to get your name in front of them.Remember they are regular people like you and me, the more they see your name, and see that you contribute to their site, the more likely they are to say yes when you try and offer a joint venture, or a guest post on their blog.

*One big tip on this make your comments stand out, build upon the original post, and make your comment provide extended value to their site, and even cite other posts that back up what you say, and you will soon become an authority.*

2. Follow them on twitter, and respond to them often, many of the A-list bloggers are on twitter, and contribute frequently. The bottom line is the more you provide to the conversation, the more they see your name, the more likely you are to get noticed.

3. Blog, blog often, and make it count. If you do happen to get noticed by an A-lister, it is likely they will subscribe to your feed, if you do receive their attention, you need to blow them away with great content so that they stay attentive to what you say.

Note this is often, just a good practice as it will ensure that you current subscribers stay very happy, afterall the more attention grabbing your blog, the more visitors.Even if you don’t build a ‘friendship’ with an A-lister, you may gain their attention enough to have them link to your blog, which will bring a lot of google-juice and traffic your way.

4. Diversify your efforts, as in all friendshipping efforts, you just may not be able to build rapport, they might not like you, something you said might push them away, or tick them off. Especially if you’re religious or political beliefs differ.

Don’t focus all your efforts on building rapport with one person, instead spread yourself across maybe 5-10 different high trafficked blogs that are relative to your content. You might make it a daily thing to post 1-2 comments per blog, or you could post like 5-10 comments per day on a different blog each day. For instance have monday be JohnChow, tuesday you might head over to Shoemoney, and wednesday might be Problogger Darren Rowse.

ONe more important tip – whichever strategy you implement, to be truly successful you MUST be consistant, the #1 cause of failure to any blog is failure to be consistant across the board.Blogging can provide a great income and be a lot of fun, once you get popular it can become a bit easier than starting out, but to get there is very hard work, consistant effort is a neccessity if you’re not willing to put in the hard work, then this business is not for you, and perhaps you should find something else that works better.

Harsh words, I know, but when you treat blogging like a business, it will begin to reap the rewards of a business.

5. Fake it till you make it! A lot of the stuff you blog about may be new to you, it may be confusing, you may not know all there is about blogging, or about plugins, or about social networks, and social media. The fact is you don’t need to know everything, but you need to act like you do – in a word. Confidence.

The “A” in “A-list” does not stand for Awesome, or A+ as in school work. It stands for Authority.

Whether or not you are an Authority on your Niche, you NEED to act like you are, and keep learning as much as possible, so that one day you will wake up and it will dawn on you…”Woah, I am an Authority, not just a BS’er!”

6. Your blog must say “I’m a professional Blog”.Here are a few tips for this:

  • Must have your own domain name. It is true, some blogs have taken off from blogspot, such as Kumiko’s, but eventually even she wised up and registered cashquests.com.A domain name basically says that you’re here to stay(at least for a year, till it expires – hopefully you make it past that 1st year).A domain name also helps with search engine rankings, for your brand (and yes your name can be your brand like John Chow or if you’re name is overly popular you can brand yourself as anything you like, eg: Shoemoney).

Lastly, wouldn’t it be terrible if you could’ve been John Chow, but started out at blogspot, someone saw that you were becoming famous, and they went out and bought yourname.com. Sure they might sell it to you for a couple thousand dollars.

  • Your blog design must be professional looking, it’s a wise idea to get a professionally designed blog theme – if you can afford it. I recommend starting out with a free one though, until your blog starts to take off, then purchase either a commercial one, or a custom. Also, here is a good post citing the pros and cons of pre-made blog theme vs custom blog theme.
  • You need subscribers, the more subscribers to your feed, the more trust you have, and ultimately the more, professional you will appear.Check out what Dosh Dosh has to say about why you absolutely need to build your blog’s subscriber base.
  • You must hold yourself to a higher standard.Nobody wants to communicate, follow, read, rantings of someone who is fast to start a fight, or demean someone.(Exception would be political blogs, where most of your readers are going to either support your same views, or be against – politics is one topic that can’t please all sides.

Though you can even be professional here, for instance, I usually refer to Bush in private as “the idiot”, “Dumbass”, “Retarded Drunk Monkey Boy”, but I might be a little more tactfull on my blog…or perhaps not(I’m using this as an example – and perhaps a sneaky way to vent & be unprofessional.))

  • Don’t over-do the plugins or widgets.Yes you can have too many plugins.Widgets and plugins are great, they add a lot to your blog, but they can also break your theme, and some plugins can conflict with each other and break your blog for a time, which equals less visitors.
  • Again I reiterate consistant effort, and you need a schedule for posting, which should include at least 1 post per day. Just figure you need at least 300-1000 posts to be on the level of the A-list bloggers, and if you post 1 a day, it might take you a whole year, maybe even two.Did you know to be on the level of Problogger (20,000 posts in 4 years!). That’s a bit much but you have to be posting consistently to measure up!Personally I strive for 2-3 posts per day or 14 minimum in a given week.

7. Last but not least, flattery goes a long way, as long as you’re sincere about it!You want to be sincere and let them know how much their tips help you, or you could simply link to their posts often, and re-iterate a lot of the things they say.

This might benefit you in pingbacks / trackbacks, but most importantly it is a good way to catch their eye, and let them know that you’re a reader.

Most professional bloggers want to make their readers happy, and knowing that you are enjoying their blog, linking to their blog, will catch their eye, and if they see something they like they might link to it.

One last bit of advice, if you do manage to become an Authority, think you have what it takes to guest blog on JohnChow, Shoemoney, Problogger, DoshDosh, etc… The best way to do it is write a list of topics you’re passionate about.

Write a sample post relating to one of those topics, be sure it includes lots of pictures as the best posts do use images in almost every post, (mine lack it sometimes because it’s hard to upload photos while I’m at work, and I usually write a lot of posts while on break. )

Your post needs to be extremely informative, and use a lot of line breaks, and be easy to read, as well as easy to scan. The more insightful, truthful, and witty the better. Adding humor is also welcome, but don’t go overboard.

Once you’re ready you should write up a professional letter and send it to their email if you can find it, if not submit it by their contact form, most of the top bloggers list at least one way or another to be contacted.

If you don’t hear anything back in 7 days, you should submit another letter, and ask them if they’ve considered your offer, if not – ask them if they could give you some tips on how you can better your chances of being accepted as a guest blogger(or insert another goal, if you want them to sponsor something, like perhaps your weightloss).

One last tip – give them love – digg their best posts, stumble a post if you like it, or share it on one of the many networks out there……And on that note, please do me a BIG favor and Digg this post. I would really appreciate it, and you’d definitely get on my good side.

Cheers!

Oh yeah, here’s some related articles:

I had 26 responses to the following survey on twitter: “What time do you read your feeds the most, or see the most hits..”

My findings were both what I thought it would be, with a few twists.

I was pretty certain that Morning would be the best time of day. Other than that I wasn’t very certain.

According to my small poll, I was correct -  12 of the people polled, said they read their feeds in the early morning usually between 6-9am.

What I didn’t expect was for the second runner up to be the Night Crew(8pm – Midnight). There were 9 who reported the most activity @ Night.

Third is also a surprise, because it’s a busy time, people are coming home, spending time with families, and eating dinner. But third place is Evenings between 5pm-8pm. There were8 who chose this option.

Tieing for third was the mid morning group (9-11). 8 people also chose this option.

4th place was Afternoon (2-5pm). With 6 people.

5th Place was Noon and Late Night with 2 people. (Noon is roughly @ 12, give or take an hour); Late night is considered after Midnight.

All in all it was an interesting experiment, I think the most interesting part is that I asked a question on Twitter, and got 25 really good answers, which turned into a pretty neat blog post. Twitter really is a wonder.

I’d like to thank the following participants for contributing to this post:

Don’t hate me – I totally just found out about this – kinda funny actually – but my feed should be showing full-posts now.

I am so embarassed I wrote about how important it is for full feeds, yesterday, and found out from a subscriber today that mine aren’t showing full feeds. I swear I’m not a hypocrite. lol.

Don’t worry I took care of that – please feel free to subscribe now.

I’d like to thank Rob Williams over at 170spoons.com for letting me know.

Is 2008 the year of the Lifestream?

Update: I forgot what year it is, updated 2007 to 2008 in title.

Life stream, I believe it was facebook who first came up with the idea.

Now most social networks have it built in. Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku, simply are nothing more than a lifestream.

Friendfeed and Socialthing both aggregate all of your feeds, and lifestreams.

Friend feed recently announced the launch of an API which you can read about here, here, and here.

Mashable did a good write up today listing 8 life streaming sites.

Here’s the list:

  1. Correlate.us - has cool graphing features regarding your life stream.
  2. Friendfeed - Need I say more? Most talked about aggregator, combines most of your social networks, blogs, lifestreams into one.
  3. Iminta.com - currently in private beta, but offers 26 services. You can read a more detailed review here.
  4. Life2Front.com – has the goal of pushing virtually more content to your feed, than any other service out there. Currently in private beta.
  5. LiveZuu.com - Lifestreaming, with a focus on sleekness and prettified designs.
  6. Mybloglog.com – This has been a community player for a long time, and has recently added lifestreaming.
  7. OneSwirl.com – Same as the rest, with the feel of an rss reader, and an event calendar.
  8. Profilactic.com – Supports over 150 different services that you can import from, letting your friends, and colleagues no virtually everything you could possibly do online…
  9. Socialthing.com – Currently in private beta, it’s goal is to allow you to bring your friends with you, wherever you go onto any network.

Right now it seems the two biggest competitors are Friendfeed and SocialThing, Friendfeed seems on top for now though because they are always adding new features, and their launch of an api will only make the service better, where as Social thing, is getting in the game a little later, and has a lot to catch up on.

Twitter continues to Amaze me – Doubled my subscribers in 2 days!

I wrote yesterday how I got about 15 new subscribers in one day using twitter.

I woke up today, and checked my stats. Today I had 63 subscribers, up from 47.

My blog had approximately 600+ hits yesterday.

The most I’ve ever received on any of my online entities.

This truly is awesome, I am a twitter believer.

There is a downside though, with twitter comes a lot of distractions, the same can also be said of friendfeed, pownce, etc…(which I’m also trying to tap into a little bit.)

My major advice is to be devoted to your blog above all else. Twitter is great, and can give you some great ideas as to what to blog about, but the bottom line to being successful is to blog, and blog often.

I try for 2 times per day, 3 would be great, but even once per day if you’re really busy. If you go long periods without writing you’ll never build a true following, and you will lose a lot of your current readers.

Yesterday, I also asked about people who ‘Google Themselves‘. I got a lot of responses in comments, as well as a few on twitter.

As an experiment, I’ve decided to make a change in the Title of this blog, from ‘There’s a Blog in My Soup’, to “There’s a Blog in my Soup: A Blog by Patrick Curl”.

My goal is to see if that raises my ‘brand’, in the search engines.

Also if this is your first time reading my blog you might want to check out, my latest pillar article, on 40 some odd ways to increase your rss subscriber count – which I will be updating regularly.

I have a question.

Have you ever googled yourself, to see what all is out there on you?

John Chow(393,000 results) and Darren Rowse(180,000) are huge names, they’ve branded themselves and you can find thousands of pages on them. (Be sure when googling a name to enclose it in “quotations” so it searches for the exact name).

Have you thought of branding yourself? I personally try to use my name as often as possible. I use it as my username on most social networks, etc… It’s even my twitter id.

I’d like to see how people rank for their names in the search engines – are you popular or famous? Go ahead and tell me what your google results are. I think this would be a fun experiment. My Google results are: 6,090. It’s no Darren or John, but its a nice start!

By the way – I think it’s funny that JohnChow has so many listings, but JohnCOW actually is ranked #1 for the term ‘John Chow’. Funny, huh?

I’ve been a member of twitter for a long time, ever since I heard about it from mashable.com.

I usually try a lot of the stuff I hear there, but sometimes it’s hard to really use, and get into a social network.

For me, at first anyway, I didn’t get nor even understand twitter. Months went by where I had about 5 followers and I followed 0 people, myself. The only real interaction I had was my blog posts getting posted to twitter, me thinking – any promotion would help my blog.

This weekend I was taking a little closer look at twitter, and I noticed Robert Scoble’s account. He has 15,000 followers, which is a lot, and makes sense he has a popular blog, only seems right that he’s got a lot of twitter followers. However, I also noticed he is following about the same number of people, and it dawned on me, that if someone who’s already successful, is following that many people, then perhaps that is at least one step to becoming successful myself.

So over the weekend, and during the week, while at work, between phone calls(yes, I work in a call center – the secret is out).. I’ve been following as many people as I can, so far about 4,000. That has translated into about 600 followers, and I find as I contribute to conversations, and others see people responding to me on someone elses’ account, they too start following, as nobody likes to be left out of the conversation.

Speaking of Robert Scoble, he wrote a really good post, himself on “The secret to Twitter”.

Once you have the following on twitter – you simply need to post high quality blog posts, and make sure your posts get added to twitter, some people will click through, many will subscribe, and some might even blog about your posts(so if you’re reading this post, and like it, feel free to blog it!).

There are some plugins you can use to send your blog posts to twitter, and there’s also a service. The main plugin I use is: Twitter updater.

Here is a good service -that lets you add any feed to twitter, there have been some who’ve used yahoo pipes to create some cool twitter feeds. The service is actually called: “TwitterFeed“.

In closing, I would highly recommend, if you’re looking to increase traffic and subscribers, that you make sure to follow as many people as possible, and of course approve anyone who follows you, I seriously went from 32 subscribers to 47 in one night, and I’m excited to see what tonight holds in store.

Full feeds, are the ONLY way to Go!

I wrote in my post “
Blogs need to eat too! Feed your blog with 39 ways to build your RSS Subscriber base. So easy a slackjawed yokel could do it!” one of the tips that I state to increase your subscribers is is to use full feeds, I’m going to expand on this a little further.

There are 2 main reasons that opponents of this thinking cite as their reasons for using partial feeds.

  1. Using a partial feed forces the reader to visit their site – and essentially raise their stats, ranking, and bring in more money from advertisers. This may actually be true if you’re a large blog, with tons of great content like mashable.com, but for the small-time blogger, 90% of your readers are going to be too lazy to click on through and read the rest of your article. This hurts your credibility. You build credibility by writing awesome articles that everyone bookmarks, shares, and loves. If people can’t, don’t, or won’t read your post, they can’t see how great it is, and won’t bother visiting your blog anymore. You want people to read your content no matter what to build up your name, brand, and reputation.

Secondly, many readers, automatically just unsubscribe from any and all blogs that use partial feeds, if you’re ok with losing 40% of readers out there, then by all means use partial feeds, but I highly advise against it.

Also according to feedburner, having a partial feed will not increase clickthroughs to your site at all.

  2. Using partial feeds, can save your content from being scraped. That’s not always true, and the damage of losing subscribers, followers, etc out-weighs the alternative. It’s also possible that partial feeds can actually help scrapers, as the keyword density may be better.

Conclusion:

Successful blogging is about getting your message out there, and making your readers happy, think of what you would do in their situation, if reading a partial post do you always click through to the website? If so you’re the exception…

Personally, I get pissed if a blogger actually expects me to click through to their website, when I’m surfing my reader.

Most bloggers are lazy, or way to busy to click through on every post, especially if they’re researching for a new blog post, which is what I am doing 90% of the time I’m using my reader.

Bottom line: Stop pissing off people off and Switch to a Full Feed!

Here are a few other great blog posts I read recently to back this up.

Lasers may Revolution the way data is passed on Computers, replacing wires completely.

Sun has begun research on a new computing technology that may or may not even be possible.

Currently, there are thousands of small wires that run along the motherboard and other cards that are used in computers.

Those wires are a lot of what causes a computer to run slow, and need time to think.

Sun is researching a method of using lasers instead of wires, this could theoretically speed up computers by 10000x after all what’s faster than the speed of light?
Moore’s law states in laymen’s terms that technology basically doubles every two years, (in technical terms, it states that the # of transistors that can be inexpensively put on a circuit board doubles every 2 years)…

The reason I bring that up is that with this new technology, which they say has a 50% chance of failing altogether – they are boasting that it would destroy Moore’s law.

I personally think it’s pretty cool, probably wouldn’t show up in personal computers for 5-10 years, if it’s possible, but the speed would be pretty amazing.

Using RSS Feeds to Blow up the (Writers) Block!

How to use RSS Feeds to break up Writers Topic…

I’ve written a lot lately about rss feeds, however this topic is more about getting over writer’s block, & speed blogging.

It’s a fact that more content = more search engine rankings / directory listings, and more visitors. Of course quality matters too — but I’m going to show you a quick way to write high quality articles fast.

First, I recommend google reader, as it’s my feed reader of choice. I’m currently signed up to all of the major blogs that interest me, a good site to see a list of blogs ranked by # of RSS subscribers is RatingBurner.

I recommend signing up for about 20+ blogs, the more the merrier. Then you will open your reader and just browse headlines that intrigue you, when you see one you like, click on the little star next to it, this will flag it. I generally do this about 3-4 times a day, sometimes more…

I generally pick 1-2 days a week where I speed-blog and write a majority of my posts, my goal is to write 3 blogs per day, of course with my busy schedule it’s hard to always hit that, but it’s something to shoot for.

Now, in your reader click on the ‘Starred Items’ link on the top left. It will show you all the posts you checked as your favorites. Now look for the headline that you think would be the funnest to write about. I subscriber to gizmodo, techcrunch, ars technica, and other tech blogs, and a lot of the time you will have posts that are almost identical. This is actually good – it means its a hot topic.

What I do is I pick the best keyword for that article, and search for it in the search form at the top of the reader, an example would be a post I found on all of the tech blogs about a PC Synching Elmo that after a battery change, started saying ‘Kill James’, James, being the 2 year old owner of the psychotic doll. Then you’ll notice, I linked to the posts it came from – this will build links back to your site, and increase your traffic, especially for blogs that remove no-follow.

If you’re not using your feed reader to help your blogging efforts you’re missing out on a lot of quality blog posts, and if you’re not writing at least one post per day it will take you a very long time to catch up with the likes of Darren Rowse and John Chow.

Another tip is to be sure if you’re writing late at night to set your post timestamp to the next morning, after 6am EST, I find this will net you the largest amount of traffic, as that’s when the world is most active, especially the english speaking world(no offense to Australians or Brits, )….

Blogs gotta Eat Too! Here are 39 Great Ways to Feed Your blog so it Grows

  1. Educate Your Readers – How can they subscribe to an RSS Feed, if they don’t KNOW what an RSS Feed is?It is essential to discuss what an rss feed is, what a feed reader is, and how to subscribe, don’t assume your readers are the most tech savvy, go slow and have patience with them. You may also want to give them some links to feed reader programs and sites.Examples:
  2. Give them the Email Option. Feed readers are the rave, most of us know how to use them, and have a favorite feed reader, but not ALL of us. Some people aren’t comfortable with new software – so offer them something familiar – a way to subscribe via email. Feedburner, and Feedblitz, are two companies that make this easy.I highly recommend using feedburner, in fact I’d say that feedburner is a necessary tool for a successful blogger. Besides giving an email option, you can also use feedburner to track how many subscribers you have, and there are a myriad of great features inside feedburner that just make blogging easier. You can even make money with it!Feedburner Email Example:
    Enter your email address:

    Delivered by FeedBurner
  3. Feedcount example:

Blogs need to eat too! Feed your blog with 39 ways to build your RSS Subscriber base. So easy a slackjawed yokel could do it!

  4. Throw a Contest. A lot of blogs I’ve noticed are using this tactic more and more. Blog contests can drive a lot of traffic to your site, and making the only entry requirement, having them subscribe ensures that you will get a lot of entries, and each entry is a new subscriber. Here’s some good articles on running a good contest:
  5. Give something away. Rewarding people for subscribing is a great way to build a large subscriber base, free hosting, free wordpress installation, entrecard credits, ebooks, etc…Here’s a good Wordpress plugin to help you along: WP RSS Sticky
  6. Promote it Boldly, with a graphic. Above the fold. Like mine is! By the way if you haven’t subscribed yet, maybe you should now, before you forget!
  7. Contribute to online communities. Promote the feed on forums / comments / email signatures, etc..wherever you can ethically post your link. Another good way to do this is answer a lot of questions on yahoo answers, and keep your feed subscription link in your signature, this is a wonderful way to build yourself up as an authority on an issue, and with credibility come the flock of subscribers.Maki – from Dosh Dosh – wrote “how you can increase your RSS subscriptions through comments alone.”
  8. Use Full Feeds. I’m an American, I don’t know about the rest of the world but I’m lazy and most people are, people are also impatient, they do not want to have to visit your site, wait for it to load, etc…Make your feed a full feed, and your subscribers will love you, and they may stick around for the long haul.
  9. Run an ad campaign. Use a special landing page designed to receive subscribers to your blog. Giving something away on this page could be a bonus, you could also use entrecard and promote a landing page as well, designed to drive people to subscribe to your blog, one thing you might do here is list some of your best blog posts.
  10. Write compelling content. Of course when it all boils down, compelling content is the best surefire way to build and keep people coming back to your blog, and subscribing to your feed.
  11. Be a Guest Blogging Pro. A good way to introduce yourself to new people, is via guest blogging on other’s blogs, especially if you can land a spot on a blog with a little more authority or reach than your own.
  12. Start a Podcast. Podcasts are great way to gain more visitors, there are many people who love and follow podcasts, and for those who are camera shy, it beats youtube. Although youtube videos would be another method.
  13. Network with other bloggers. Probably one of the biggest, the more friends you have the more people you have linking to your best posts. I know I don’t always have something to write about so I write a small overview of a post someone else wrote and link to the post(of course this benefits me because of the pingback/trackback)
  14. Cross Promotional Deals. Using the blogs that you networked with in step 12, as a starting point you can show a link to their rss subscription link in your feed, and they can do the same for you. The biggest benefit of this is that everyone who sees your link, is seeing it because they are subscribed to an rss feed – or in other words, they are familiar with rss, and don’t need to be educated. Here are some plugins to help in setting up text ads on your feeds:
  15. Use Feedflare. Feedflare is a built in plugin through feedburner which will make it easy for people to stumble, digg, or bookmark your blog.
  16. Use Noindex. This will keep search engines from indexing your feed, and will thus help from getting duplicate content.
  17. A little black hat for you. Find popular blogs not using feedburner and burn their feed as yours. Then have feedburner link the feed to yours, automatically you will have a large number of subscribers. This isn’t very ethical, but alas I figured I’d list it here, as I found it through another blog.
  18. Get Social! Use the following social media sites, and be sure to bookmark your posts. You should also focus to building relationships on these sites and gathering friends.
  19. Use catchy headlines. In the inundation of information, you only have 1-3 seconds to catch someone’s attention enough to make them click on your post, the more catchy, and un-boring the headline the more likely you are to win their attention for the next 5 minutes.
  20. Enlist the help of friends. Sort of along the lines of networking, but instead of building new friends, use your existing network to spread the word about your blog.
  21. SEO and SEM. It’s a no brainer if people find your site via search engines, and see a post they like, they are more likely to keep coming back, and might subscribe to your feed.
  22. Post as if your life were on the line. The More posts, the more people will find your blog. Also the more valuable your blog will be, but keep the topics relevant. You really need to post at least one blog post per day, it doesn’t matter if you write them all during the week you should use the timestamp feature to make them post later on in the day or week, the best time a day for blog posts are usually between 8am and noon Eastern time, in my opinion.
  23. Stick to your niche. At least try and stick to your niche as much as possible, it will keep your seo high, and your subscribers will be satisfied, after all – they subscribed because they like the stuff you’re writing about – don’t change niches, and expect them to stick around.
  24. Citations from other bloggers in your niche. Or blog reviews. Getting write-ups from other bloggers is a good way to gain credibility and authority. If you can get some citations, whether by asking, trading, or just writing content that is so damn good everybody wants to link to it, you will see your subscriber count skyrocket.
  25. Pillar Articles. You Must have 5 Pillar Articles as soon as possible, these will make or break you. I recommend writing one per week, or every two weeks at the least. You also will want to put a link to these prominently on your blog.
  26. Linkbait & Traffic Bait. Link bait, is just something like a blog post, picture, video, etc that pulls in people, its sometimes viral and people share it with their friends, good examples of linkbait can be found at the front of digg, and reddit.
  27. GEt listed in Blog / Rss Directories. Here are a few lists:
  28. Be sure you’re pinging. Pinging basically notifies rss and blog directories that your blog has updated, and a lot of people check the rss sites when they are looking for topics to read. Two really good ping sites are ping-o-matic, and pingoat.
  29. Share the link love(don’t let them know you’re really being greedy…). Include plenty of outbound links to blogs with relevant posts, this adds credibility to your post, provides your readers with more information on the topic they’re searching for, and also gives you some trackback and link love on the blog that you’re linking to. Especially if you link to blogs that remove nofollow on trackbacks / pingbacks.
  30. Widgetize your Blog. Use mybloglog, blogcatalog, bumpzee, digg, and reddit widgets. Gregarious is a good wordpress plugin that helps with this.
  31. Make sure your blogs’ autodiscovery feature is working. This is pretty simple you basically just need to add some html to your blog in the header file. Here’s the code that you should add:
    <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml"
      title="RSS Feed for theresabloginmysoup.com"
      href="http://www.theresabloginmysoup.com/?TPhaQjou" mce_href="http://www.theresabloginmysoup.com/?TPhaQjou" />
  32. Get personal! Send personalized emails to each commenter on your blog, and at the end of the email ask them to do you a favor and subscribe to your blog – make this as personal as possible and this is a great way to network. Also if any readers send you an email, please make sure to email them asap, and again ask them to subscribe. Also of course you definitely MUST answer and respond to ALL comments, asap. Your blog should feel more like a community site, or at the least a question and answer session.
  33. Write easy to scan content.  Most people who use readers have limited attention and patience – they usually want the meat of what you have to say and they want it now! I bet half of you reading this now, are just reading the subtopics in bold, but that’s ok. I also know many of you have subscribed, or will subscribe.
  34. Participate in Blog Carnivals. Blog carnivals are great ways to gain new subscribers, alas it is beyond the scope of this article, and this is actually one spot that I myself could use some more experience in, but here are some good articles on blog carnivals:
  35. Hire Guest Bloggers. Encourage bloggers to post guest posts on your blog. Their fans will usually check out your blog, and they will usually link up their guest posts, plus it’s free totally unique high quality content for your blog. I don’t see how you can go wrong.
  36. Become an Authority.  If you help people who have questions on sites like Yahoo Answers. Also becoming very active in Forums and linking to some of your pillar articles, and your RSS feed url, will drastically grow your feed. I recommend that you regularly post to 6-8 forums relating to your blog. I’d also recommend that you find the highest ranking forums for your niche, as not all forums are created equal. Don’t just rely on one ranking method though.I’d recommend checking their alexa ranking, google pr, and if they remove nofollow from signatures that’s a big bonus(if they don’t have signatures, then you should stay away from the forum altogether…from a marketing standpoint.)
  37. Post a Series. Start a series of posts, if you grab your readers attention, then they will subscribe so that they don’t miss the conclusion.
  38. Display your Subscriber Stats.  Once you reach 100 subscribers display your RSS Subscriber count, people like to follow, and seeing that you have a large following will push some into subscribing.
  39. Collaborate with other bloggers. This can be a lot of fun you could co-write a series of posts, and alternate which blog you post it on, you can share ads with each other’s rss feed, you can start a business together, etc.. Anything’s possible.
  40. Remind your Subscribers. Adding a ‘If you liked this post, please subscribe to my feed’ link at the end of each blog post is a good way to get a few more subscribers. There’s a really great plugin for this called Subscribe-Remind, check it out!

This list is by no means complete and full, I’m definitely going to be adding more as I learn more. I’ve scoured the net for the most accurate and up-to-date information on building RSS subscribers.

Below are some of the wonderful resources I’ve found regarding getting more rss subscribers:

Internal linking, is one of the given tools in an seo-masters’ toolbox.

Internal linking is essential for building pagerank, and adding umph to your search engine optimization.

Why Give Yourself some Link Love?

1. First off it helps your visitors find more useful information on your blog, and builds credibility and stickyness.

2. Robots, often count how many pages link to a page, even giving weight to links coming from your own domain. The more links the better, plus it gives them an easy way of finding the links.

What’s the Best Way to Build Internal Links?

You could easily keep a list of all your blog postings, and key in each link by hand. That of course would be the hard way, if you’re one of those bloggers, (And I know you’re reading this)… who like to invent the wheel, or do things the hardway, by all means, start manually linking up content.

For the rest of you, there’s a cool wordpress plugin that makes it easy. It’s called The aLinks plugin for Wordpress.

You can watch this cool video also about Self-Link’in or view it over at 45n5:

Mofuse = Motraffic from Mobile Users

Most bloggers are willing to pay any price to get the traffic whether this is spending 100 hours posting in forums, writing posts, or posting comments on other blog posts.

But what good is getting traffic, if your viewers can’t view it?

Of course it is important to build your website so it shows up perfectly in all the major web browsers.

But one major market that goes ignored is the Mobile phone network.

In eastern nations it is more likely someone will visit your site via an iphone, or web-based mobile phone, than via an internet browser.

What will they seE?

Of course you can spend the time and optimize your blog, or hire someone to do it for you…but many of us just don’t have those kind of resources.

Enter Mofuse. Mofuse is a site currently in beta with a cool program to turn any site or blog into mobile ready content.

It’s free to join, and they even help you monetize your content.

Most geeks will launch their own mobi versions of their blogs, but this is a great program for those who can’t afford it, for an additional $3 monthly you can also get the pro version, and host it on your own domain as well.

Check out my mobile feed here: http://tabims.mofuse.mobi/

They do currently have limited ads on the iphone layout, but that is currently being fixed.

Kidzui

This is a pretty interesting development, apparently a browser has just launched for children aged 3-12. The browser doesn’t just protect children from content they shouldn’t be viewing, but it pulls up the best content for them to view for entertainment, and learning values.

Instead of programming filters, that could miss adult material, and is essentially a blacklisting of bad sites, (with 100,000 new bad sites popping up every second..) the Kidzui browser only allows pages that have been whitelisted, and approved, it includes pages from youtube, etc.

Essentially it is a safe area for children to socialize and learn new things online. So far approximately 500,000 sites and pages have made it to the whitelist. Spiders initially gathered the content, but in the end humans have reviewed every single page, game, video, etc…

Other sites can be ‘allowed’ by parents, and some links that are ok, but blocked can be submitted for moderation.

Overall Kidzui has a pretty awesome design, the only negative, being the $5-10 monthly cost that it will be to use the software, many parents may decide to opt out due to the charge. I think they would be better off to use advertising, especially catered to their target market – Children. Essentially they have a browser that could be the only browser that 3-12 years olds use, if they position themselves properly, and Kids may not necessarily bring in a lot of money, but many of the spoiled little brats, get whatever they want – usually what they see on tv, or in this case what they see on ‘Kidzui’.

This of course is just my opinion. In fact, a good method might be to find a way to insert their ads, in place of other ads on any and all websites visited, kinda like the plugins on firefox that block ads.
